Background

Pteridophytes are archaic plants commonly referred to as ferns or fern allies. Valuable links in the evolution and success of land plants, they were the dominant group of plants during the carboniferous period. Since their dominating era, some of the species have survived long and are known as relic species. These species play a major role in inferring the evolutionary trends and phylogenetic relationships. Pteridophytes have enormous aesthetic value and multifarious scope for exploring the bioactive molecules against various pathogenic causal organisms. They can be resources of genes for crop improvement, for example against desiccation and drought stress. A number of pteridophytic species are of immense economic value. The fern market, worth several million dollars and involving many entrepreneurs of different countries, plays a pivotal role in generating livelihood opportunities. It has become prime necessity to sustainably utilize our bio-resources and equitably share the benefit. Thus, to meet the market demand, the enormous setup of fernery and nursery of pteridophytes either at small or large scale can help to uplift the economy of common people, especially those living in the hilly areas.

Pteridophytes, already squeezed to minimal space by their competitive evolutionary successors, now bear the brunt of human development. Going back after years, we rarely find ferns where we saw them before. Peculiar lifestyle and exacting requirements of their holed up gametophytes also make them most vulnerable to climate change. Taxonomists and ecologists face the challenge of conserving what remains of this oldest group of land plants. We need to recommend setting up of 'Fern Parks and Sanctuaries" at suitable locations in India.

Botanical Survey of India

Botanical Survey of India (BSI) was established in 1890 with the objective of exploring the plant resources of the country. BSI has been engaged in undertaking intensive floristic surveys and collecting accurate and detailed information on the taxonomy, distribution, ecology and economic utility of plants in the country; collecting, identifying and distributing materials that may be of use to educational and research institutions; and acting as the custodian of authentic collections in well planned herbaria and documenting plant resources in the form of local, district, state and national flora. BSI has 11 regional centers in different regions of India. Central National Herbarium is the largest herbarium in India.

Indian Fern Society

The Indian Fern Society founded in 1983, is an international organization of Researchers and persons interested in ferns and fern-allies. The main aim of the Society is to promote researches on Pteridophytes world-wide. The Indian Fern Society functioned at Patiala in 1983 from where it functioned for 25 years with the Late Prof. S S Bir as its first Secretary-Treasurer. Due to advancing age of Prof Bir, it was decided in the General Body meeting held at CSIR-NBRI, Lucknow, during the Silver Jubilee Celebrations (29 November 2008), to shift the Head Office of the Society to Chandigarh. The society also publishes the Indian Fern Journal and has so far published 39 volumes.
